We live in difficult, disorienting times. In this season of new beginnings and fresh resolutions, we confront the question: how should I respond? Buddhist teachings tell us the place to start is by slowing down. “Bring your mind to noble silence” said the Buddha. “Unify your mind in noble silence. Concentrate your mind in noble silence.” The Buddha points not simply to physical silence but to what that silence produces: a deep inner stillness from which clarity can emerge. This Buddhist insight is present across spiritual traditions, speaking to what the Trappist monk Fr. Thomas Merton calls the “deep inner sustaining power of silence.” Reacting to the current crises of our times, Nigerian post-activist writer and philosopher Bayo Akomalofe puts it plainly: “The times are urgent. Let us slow down.” The times are indeed urgent. At Peace House, we invite you to slow down.
